I had been writing this story for some time but was a little hesitant about sharing it at first, although I loved the story and the characters. My niece came to visit and insisted on reading it while she was here, so I began printing out the story chapter by chapter. I could hardly keep up with Jenna asking for the next chapter, which made me realize I might have something special here. I began printing copies for family and friends around Texas, and they passed them on to their families and friends. It has been so exciting to hear the responses to this story that readers have shared with me. The following are just a few of the comments of some of my first readers:
“Just finished the book about two hours ago. Have to tell you, I was all prepared to be only ‘proofreader- interested’ in it since it’s not my usual preference in fiction and all. But Donna, I found myself being eager to get back to it when I had to leave it! I liked the story, and I liked the morals, and it flowed, and it had humor, and it sounded real… I found a wonderful turn of phrase that you wrote that just made me see what is really an abstract idea. Loved it! After having been with the Indians for a few days, you wrote about ‘how fragile the line was from hand to mouth.’ Awesome. Phrases and images like this are one of the reasons I read a lot.” --Clara Jo Horton, Cotulla, TX
“My daughter gave me your book Grace Falling Like Rain for my birthday, and I started reading it after a football game on Friday. I did sleep for a few hours and just finished this morning (Saturday). What a marvelous expression of God's grace! Such a compelling and understandable way of showing readers what God's grace is in real life! I love that period of our country's history. Always kind of thought I was 150 years too late but God always knows best. I’m eagerly waiting for your sequel. God bless your continued writing about His love.” --Pat Howard, Georgetown, TX
The book makes me think of Donna’s writing as a female Elmer Kelton. --Bill Cotulla, South Texas rancher
“It was awesome, truly awesome! A real page turner…” -- Carmen Oliver, Round Rock, TX
“I was hooked from chapter one and couldn’t stop reading excerpts to my husband, Robert, who grew up cowboyin’.” --Mary Jan Jenkins, Alice, TX
“I loved the book and my husband asked if he could read it, too. Would you believe I caught him reading it during one of the Astros play-off games? And we’re huge Astros fans!” --Karen Thomison, Hutto, TX
"This is a great book! Once I started reading it, I found it was hard to put down. I enjoyed it immensely and I could almost visualize the area and the characters, as if I was watching a movie. I believe a movie should be made from this book. I'm looking forward to the next sequel." --Lydia Alexander, Georgetown, TX
“You made me miss my nap today because I couldn’t put your book down!” --Rita Beights, Pilot Point, TX
"I have just finished reading Mercy's Face, and it's every bit as good as Grace Falling Like Rain. Your writing is superb. Our patrons have been anxiously awaiting this book, so we have a reserve list for it." --Willa Bose, Librarian, Waskom, TX
Donna Van Cleve was a public library director for nine years before moving to the Austin area. She enrolled in graduate school and earned her MLS degree to become a school librarian. She has been writing for twenty-five years and wrote an award-winning weekly column from 1999 until 2002 until she went back to school. She believes she has the best of both worlds-- the opportunity to write books and the joy of working around books all day.
